There is subtlety, and then there is the Giant Sungold. This plant does not understand the concept of restraint.
While standard sunflowers are content to look like daisies, the Sungold is an exercise in opulence. It produces massive, fully double flower heads—dense, spherical explosions of golden-yellow petals that resemble giant pom-poms. It is a texture so thick it looks almost upholstered.
Standing at a commanding five to six feet, this is not a background plant; it is a golden monolith. It creates an immediate focal point, demanding that the rest of the garden orient itself around its presence.

The Curator’s Notes:
-
The Architecture: These blooms are heavy, both visually and physically. At 10–12 inches across, they offer a density of color that standard single-petal varieties simply cannot achieve.
-
The Placement: Do not waste this in a pot. It requires the back of the border, where it can loom over lesser plants like a benevolent sun god.
-
Ecological Hub: The density of the bloom makes it a VIP lounge for pollinators. Expect a high volume of bees navigating the complex petals.
-
Structural Support: Vanity has a price. Because the heads are so massive, the stalks may require staking in high winds. Think of it as providing a crutch for its enormous ego.
-
The Cut: One stem is an arrangement. Two stems is a centerpiece. Three stems is a lifestyle statement.
