CLASSIFICATION: Organic Hand-Woven Textile PROVENANCE: Totonicapán, Guatemala DYE METHOD: Indigofera (Natural Fermentation) PALETTE: Deep Indigo | Unbleached Ivory ROLE: The Living Blue

Synthetic blue is a static, dead color. Natural indigo is alive.

This textile is a study in botanical chemistry. Handwoven by artisans in Totonicapán using traditional foot-looms, it rejects the harsh uniformity of chemical dyes in favor of the complex, oxidative magic of the indigo plant. The result is a deep, atmospheric blue that interacts with the unbleached, natural ivory cotton to create a plaid of exceptional depth.

It is not merely a towel; it is a document of an ancient dying art. It possesses a softness that synthetic fibers cannot mimic and a color that does not fade so much as it evolves.

THE CURATOR'S NOTES

  • The Chromatic Depth: Natural indigo is unique because it is not water-soluble; it bonds physically to the fiber. This creates a color that vibrates with intensity. It will age like high-end denim, developing a unique patina the more you use it.
  • Mechanical Integrity: The footloom allows the weaver to apply significant tension to the warp. This results in a textile that is dense, durable, and highly absorbent—far superior to the loose, fluffy weaves of mass manufacturing.
  • Material Honesty: The ivory tone is not a dye; it is the color of the cotton itself. By leaving it unbleached, we preserve the integrity of the fiber, ensuring it remains soft against the skin.
  • The "Coco" Grid: The plaid pattern is classic but executed with a loose, organic hand. It brings a necessary geometric order to the softness of the bathroom or kitchen.
